💰 Initial Financing Plan and Conspiracy-Driven Complications with the World Bank

The initial estimated cost of the project was set at approximately 10,161 crore Taka (which later rose to 30,193 crore Taka). Implementing this massive budget independently was extremely daunting for a country like Bangladesh. Consequently, loan agreements worth about 1.2 billion USD were signed with the World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), JICA, and Islamic Development Bank (IsDB). However, in early 2012, citing fabricated and conspiratorial allegations of corruption, the World Bank suspended its financing for this mega-project, plunging the project into deep uncertainty and casting a major shadow on the country's image in the international arena.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) initiated an investigation based on these allegations, and following an extended probe, the case reached the Quebec jurisdiction of the Canadian Supreme Court. In that judicial proceeding of the Canadian court, all corruption allegations brought forward by the World Bank were dismissed as entirely baseless, false, and speculative. The court's verdict clearly declared that there was no real proof or existence of any bribery or corruption in the Padma Bridge project. The Canadian court's historic verdict made it crystal clear before the world that the World Bank's immature and politically motivated decision was completely wrong.

Historic Turnaround: Implementing the Mega-Project Entirely with Own Funds

Facing such non-cooperation and withdrawal of funding from the international community, instead of giving up, the Government of Bangladesh made a landmark and historic decision. In July 2012, the then Prime Minister announced the construction of the Padma Bridge using domestic funds. As one of the world's most turbulent and fierce rivers, the Padma possesses a distinct and destructive character. During the monsoon season, the average depth of this river exceeds 30 meters, and at peak monsoon times, the maximum depth reaches about 40 to 50 meters (approx. 130-160 feet). Not only that, during the rainy season, the water discharge of the Padma exceeds nearly 100,000 cusecs per second (approx. 140,000 m³/s), making it one of the highest water discharge records in the world next to the Amazon River. Alongside this massive volume of water, current speeds at the riverbed sometimes reach 4 to 5 meters per second (approx. 15-18 km/h). This fierce current and shifting deep sediment at the riverbed (scour depth, which sometimes drops below 60 meters) could have rendered the bridge foundations vulnerable at any moment, and tackling this was the ultimate test of engineers' skill and technology.

🏗️ World's Deepest Pile Driving: Dimensions, Diameters, and Technical Data of Piles

Since there was no permanent rock bed or layer at the riverbed, sustaining this bridge with ordinary piles was impossible. Therefore, to strengthen the pillar foundations, the world's deepest and strongest steel piles were utilized here. An average of 6 to 7 piles, totaling 262 piles, were driven beneath the 42 pillars.
Length of Piles: Some piles were driven to a record depth of approximately 120 meters (equivalent to a 40-story building) below the riverbed.
Diameter and Thickness of Piles: The diameter of each steel pile was 3 meters (approx. 10 feet), and the steel wall or plate thickness was extremely heavy (about 50 millimeters or more).
These massive pipes were driven deep into the soil using high-capacity hydraulic and hammering technology. Afterward, reinforcement or rods were placed inside these hollow steel pipes and completely filled with high-strength concrete, turning each pile into a massive concrete-steel column.

⚖️ Massive Concrete Weight, Span Dimensions, and Seismic Technology

To protect the superstructure or main infrastructure of the bridge, giant truss spans were utilized.
Weight and Dimensions of Spans: Each of the 41 spans placed on top of the 4 main pillars has a length of 150 meters and weighs approximately 3,140 tons. To support these massive spans, the volume of cast concrete in each pillar cap or pier head was enormous, with individual blocks weighing thousands of tons.
Seismic Isolators (Vibration Tolerance): Since Bangladesh is located in an earthquake-prone zone, world-class 'Friction Pendulum Bearings' or seismic isolators have been installed beneath every span to successfully absorb powerful earthquakes up to magnitude 8.0 on the Richter scale or shocks from tectonic plates. Consequently, in the event of a major earthquake, the bridge can maintain its structural flexibility by shifting slightly side to side to absorb the energy, keeping it completely secure.

🌉 Double-Deck Structure and Modern River Training Works

This bridge is a double-deck composite truss bridge. Its upper deck features a four-lane wide motorway, and the lower deck contains a dual-gauge railway line. To keep the river confined to its current flow path and prevent erosion on both banks, one of the world's most expensive river training works was carried out over an area of approximately 13 kilometers at the Mawa and Jajira ends, where millions of Taka worth of geo-bags and CC blocks were dumped.
